| "Goddess" by Steven Olszewski, handbuilt ceramic, raku-fired and stained |
Neighborhood Art
Steven Olszewski typifies what is perceived to be the laid back artist. He is soft spoken and modest. His work exemplifies the sense of calm that he himself has. His figures all possess an amazingly tranquil expression, that seems to only be accomplished by a lifetime of meditation. What they do not show is the intensity and drama that comes from producing the work itself. Steve's work is large-scaled, such that a standard kiln does not work for firing the pieces. He dons himself in fire protection gear, helmet and gloves and fires his works in an open pit of sorts. He can not just walk away during this process, but is an integral part of the firing itself. Most of the pieces are lain in the fire itself which is evident by the ash and the texture that becomes part of his art. Every time I see his work I fall in love with yet another piece. I am a repeat customer and most importantly an admirer of his work. I must be, as now I own three Steven Olszewski's. The piece above is my pool goddess. With her by the steps I ease into my swim suit feeling confident.
