If you never try, you’ll never know…
As the LSPOA Spring Potluck (March 26th) approached, there was a feeling of excitement with a bit of uncertainty mixed in. Without the traditional setting of a neighbor’s home, the social committee wondered if a “block party” style event hosted in the cul-de-sac on Westway Drive would work.
Would it have the same neighborly feel? Where would we set up the food? …and the bar? Would the neighbors who live in the cul-de-sac agree to let us camp out in front of their houses for the afternoon and evening? Would people even show up? Most importantly, would people have fun?
We can safely say that the answer to every question is YES! Not only were our concerns allayed, but there were many positives that came to light with this non-traditional venue. Set-up and take-down were a breeze and the spacious cul-de-sac allowed for plenty of traffic-free mingling.
Many thanks go out to the Ansted’s, the Ketchum’s and Lois Trotochau for not hesitating to say “YES” to our request for using the street and blocking access to their driveways. Extra thanks to Lois for kindly opening her home to those who needed a washroom.
More than 80 Lido Shorians attended the evening, all with big smiles in tow. We had a smorgasbord that included traditional fare such as flank steak, veggie lasagna and legendary baked beans. This year we also had a cook-off with New York vs. Chicago style hot dogs.
Which dogs won? It’s a mystery, but one thing that is certain is they were all overwhelmingly popular. There was not a morsel left at the end of the night! Janet Augustine worked her incredible magic once again and made sure that our glasses remained full and the serving platters left empty.
And this leaves us with only a few odds and ends to wrap up. If you find that you have arrived at your home at the end of the night with a wayward wine glass or a name badge (we are also looking for two pie servers and a kitchen bag filled with various bar items), please feel free to drop them at 1219 Westway and Colleen will be happy to tuck them away for our next get-together or reunite them with their original homes.
Also, while the cul-de-sac was a huge success, we are always on the lookout for new homes (or more accurately, yards/outdoor areas) in which to host the next Potluck. If you are interested in hosting, please feel free to reach out to anyone on the social committee to express interest.
Also, many thanks to Janet Minker and Miriam Cassell for all the excellent photos.
As always, it was a top drawer event!
