No to Pavilion Power

Following a lengthy debate, the LSPOA Board of Directors voted 7-3 against providing electricity to the beach Pavilion.  The issue was raised last month.  Andrew Vac was asked to look into the expense and feasibility.  He reported it would cost just less than $12,000 to run power from the Westway street entrance to the Pavilion.  During Monday's (April 4) monthly board meeting, the pros and cons were discussed.

Ken Abt argued that getting a permit to power the Pavilion could "trigger a potential reassessment" of the deeded beach property.  Others worried about the possibility of increased noise from loud music and bright lights attracting unwanted visitors or disorienting sea turtles.  Ken McMillen, who heads the beach maintenance committee, pointed out that the reason he goes to the beach is to get away from modern conveniences.

On the pro-power side, Elliott Himelfarb countered that "pulling a permit" for just 125 amps of electricity for non-commerical use would not necessarily raise any eyebrows.  He also pointed out it would be a nice amenity to have, encouraging more members to utilize the beach structure.  Vac added the lights would not have to be bright, but could be tastefully done, using small aluminum canister lighting fixtures.  This reporter reasoned the electrical outlet could be covered and locked when not in use, require a reservation and deposit to use, as well as program a timer to turn off the lights at a pre-determined time.

Another motion to run power just to the parking lot area for fans and the occasional heating of food for Association gatherings was also discussed and voted down, as was a final suggestion to connect electricity only on the street gate to the easement.

Bottom line:  keeping the Pavilion and surrounding area au naturele won the day.  So for now, candle power or batteries will have to do for those wishing to linger longer after the sun sets.

Pavilion Power Vote:
For:  Elliott Himelfarb, Andrew Vac, Bob Thill
Against:  Bob Garvin, Joe Deleo, Diane Desenberg, Ken McMillen, Ken Abt, Lois Fishman, Lou Cersosimo
