Gone but not Forgotten

BEFORE: Edstrom's home at 1150 Morningside Place

Editors note: Last week... Lee and Kathy Edstrom's front yard was resplendently adorned with a towering palm. Today, it's gone but not forgotten. Here's Kathy's version of what happened. Thanks to Larry Reinebach for the photos. ~BT

Three years ago I contracted with a tree nursery to find a nice home for our beautiful 28' Pineapple Palm (Canary Island Palm, which has grown 2 more feet in the last 3 years). The tree towered over our home (1150 Morningside Place) and although lovely, was becoming increasingly out of proportion on the property.

Believe it or not, I actually forgot about the contract with Suncoast Trees and actually called SMOA (the new Sarasota Museum of Art now housed in the old Sarasota High School on South Tamiami) to try to donate it. Thank goodness they turned me down because on Tuesday afternoon at 3pm I got a call from Suncoast saying they would be at our home Wednesday morning to take our tree.

Suncoast found a beautiful, LARGE home for it at The Villages retirement community in central Florida. Wow we are in Rhode Island and I was in shock. Between Wayne and Alice Freed's blow-by-blow's over the phone and Larry Reinbach with his trusty camera, we were kept updated on our tree's beginning adventure to it's new home.

Sorry we weren't there ourselves it seems the company did an incredible job. Even our landscaper on his visit the next day reported that there was next to nothing in damages in the yard. I still don't have an 'after' picture' so if you get hold of a camera, we'd love to see what it looks like. (We did, and here's what it looks like today.) In my mind's eye, I picture a missing tooth kind of look. Alice assures me it looks very balanced.

So that's it I think we'll be down in the next few weeks to look at it ourselves. We miss our little beach house when we're not there! ~Kathy Edstrom
