New Publix Opens

A new Publix, located at U.S. 41 at 2031 Bay Street is ready for business. The $8.1 million, two-story store opens Thursday, November 10 at 8 a.m. 130-people will be employed. “We’re pleased Publix selected Sarasota as a location to construct its new prototype,” said Mayor Suzanne Atwell.

“The opening of this new store has been greatly anticipated. It’s been exciting watching the building come out of the ground at Bay and U.S. 41. Now, I’m looking forward to it becoming a neighborhood grocery store and being part of the community for many years to come.”

In addition to the traditional grocery, meat, produce, dairy and frozen food departments, the 49,700 square-foot store will contain the following full-service departments: bakery, deli, fresh seafood, floral and pharmacy. Customers park underneath the store and take an escalator up to the shopping area. It's the 24th Publix in Sarasota County.

New Store Hours:
• 7 days a week 7:00 am - 10:00 pm

Pharmacy Hours:
• Monday through Friday 9:00 am - 8:00 pm
• Saturday 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
• Sunday 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Publix is privately owned and operated by its 150,000 employees, with 2010 sales of $25.1 billion. Currently Publix has 1,042 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

The company has been named one of FORTUNE’s “100 Best Companies to Work For in America" for 14 consecutive years.

Another Note: If approved, the 37,300 square-foot Publix adjacent to the Avenue of the Flowers shopping center on Longboat Key would close in April and reopen by the end of 2012. Earlier this year, Publix filed for permission from the Town of Longboat Key to shutter its 31-year-old grocery there and raze it to make way for another prototype.
