Bob Garvin Pens New Book

"Good neighbors make good fences. Eccentric ones make good copy."

Bob Garvin, author of "Neighbors"
So begins Robert V. (Bob) Garvin's new book, appropriately titled, "Neighbors." The spiral bound book is a collection of stories and interviews Bob has written about Lido Shores and it's personalities—for good or bad—for nearly the past decade. Also included is some history of the Easement dispute, Bob's musings on various houses in the neighborhood, and changes in ownership.

It's not a picture book, as Bob points out, but a well written, chronological compilation of the events and individuals who appeared in the LSPOA Newsletter since 2002, and have shaped Lido Shores into it's present form. "Neighbors" begins with 1997's Easement debate, a contentious battle between Lido Shorians and two neighbors who had vastly differing opinions on members' beach access. Throughout its pages, our current Board President opines about our neighborhood's architecture and reputation, and resurrects some engaging pieces on past residents we really should remember.

Although not his typical style, Bob ends with a story entitled, "Toot Your Own Horn." He's turned his astute insight inward, and shares with us his own history, in third person, no less. In closing, Garvin writes, "His favorite music is Sidney Bechet's jazz recording 'Waste No Tears'. Makes him sniffle, despite the title." Message received, Mr. G. We'll reserve the tears for laughter at your rye reflections of our "Neighbors."

"Neighbors" is available for $14 (printing cost) and is worth the nostalgic ride into the past ten-years. For a copy, E-mail Bob at: rvgarvin@comcast.net. In our opinion, Bob Garvin epitomizes the class of Lido Shores. Maybe we can coax Bob into dusting off the archives and delving even further back into Lido Shores' past for an encore performance.  ~BT
