| LSPOA member Jan Voigts inspects rusted areas of Pav roof last year |
It's been around in various iterations since the mid 1970's. It's been host to countless beach parties and Sunset Gatherings. Originally called "The Hut," then the Beach "Cabana," our beloved Pavilion just got itself a new roof. The current "Pav" was designed by Seibert Architects. After enduring a couple of years of navigating various State, Federal and Local coastal regulations, it was finally completed in 2004. 19-years of weathering the harsh salt and sand environment later, it was finally time to re-top the sturdy structure. Ten-years ago, the roof's galvanized drip edge was replaced, all the nuts and bolts on the beams switched out due to corrosion and the planks replaced on a number of the cypress benches. The Pavilion was also power washed in 2013... and again in 2020.

Last May, five-deteriorating roof areas were patched, providing time to look for a roofing contractor and the lengthy bidding and permitting process. The LSPOA Board of Directors voted in February of this year to accept a $10,700 bid from New Wave Roofing to install a new galvanized roof. The work was completed on April 12th. LSPOA member Elliott Himelfarb, who helped shepherd the project, says the new Galvalume panels should last 15-years or more.
The Pavilion has literally weathered the storm over the years. In 2018, then Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin declared a state of emergency on North Lido Beach, as gulf water relentlessly eroded the once massive sand dunes that protected it.

Waves were washing underneath the Pavilion deck and entrance ramp. A number of measures were considered, including moving the Pavilion back off the beach. Fortunately Mother Nature had other plans, and has since slowly replenished the sand around our resilient Pav.
