Covid-19 has caused many popular Sarasota events to be postponed or canceled. Not so for this year’s reinvented version of the seventh annual SarasotaMOD Weekend presented by the non-profit Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF). With Covid precautions in mind, a novel array of outdoor tour options highlight the architectural-themed offerings, including a self-guided “Gulf and Garden” walking tour of Lido Shores.

The Lido Shores outdoor tours are scheduled for Saturday November 7th and Sunday November 8th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Eleven-of our neighbors are opening their grounds (exteriors only) to visitors on the Gulf, Bayside, Pansy Bayou and New Pass in support of SAF.

Homes on the tour include:
Umbrella House

113 Morningside Drive - Essner
150 Morningside Drive - Lifeso
220 Morningside Drive - Putterman
1125 Center Place - Peterson
1100 Westway Drive - Wynn/Flanagan
1127 Westway Drive - Cox
1300 Westway Drive - Essner
1325 Westway Drive - Hargreaves
1348 Westway Drive - Bischoff
1310 John Ringling Pkwy - Voigts
1456 John Ringling Pkwy - Thill

There will be one chance to get inside one of the neighborhood’s architectural gems. In tandem with the Lido Shores walking tours, with a bundled purchase, visitors can enjoy an interior tour of the iconic Umbrella House, designed as a display home by Sarasota School architect Paul Rudolph in 1953.

The front of the Umbrella House will also be home to the MOD Shop, featuring MOD merchandise and original artwork by nationally recognized Sarasota artist John Pirman. And, on Saturday morning, November 7th at 8:00 am, wake up with other architectural enthusiasts for “Yoga Under the Umbrella.”

“For the first time ever, visitors will be given access to see amazing views from waterside properties, as 7 of the 10 homes we are showcasing are completely new to the tour,” according to LSPOA member and SAF Board Chair Anne Essner.

In addition to Lido Shores’ involvement, this year’s modified SarasotaMOD is also featuring virtual events instead of large in-person gatherings, an architectural kayak tour and self-driving tours of houses designed by architect Carl Abbott, called “Carl by Car.” SAF is honoring Abbott this year, whose distinguished career has spanned more than 50 years.
