Lido Beach Shoreline Update from City Manager Tom Barwin

Lido Shoreline Protection - Federal Funding    We were excited, relieved and heartened to learn this week that $13.4 million in federal funds has been approved and set aside by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for Lido Beach shoreline stabilization and protection.

The City already has been permitted to complete a short-term beach renourishment this fall from damage caused by Hurricane Irma.  We are moving forward with this limited quick fix as soon as possible.

By this fall, we expect to see the shoreline stabilized with approximately 200,000 cubic yards of accreted sand from the New Pass area.

Then, the long-term project in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers' funding, is planned to get underway in Spring 2019.   We fully anticipate to have the City's infrastructure protected and the shoreline restored to historical norms by the next hurricane season, subject to ongoing litigation.

Lido Beach - June 14, 2018

This news is a relief for residents and visitors as well as City staff members who have worked doggedly on this critical issue for many years.  City Engineer Alex Davis Shaw has been an integral part of the discussions with the Army Corps of Engineers and helped navigate us through the extensive permitting and funding process.  Immediate past Mayors Shelli Freeland Eddie and Willie Shaw, have been very effective advocates of this critical initiative both in Tallahassee and Washington D.C.  Thank you, all!

In the meantime, our regional Florida Department of Environmental Protection representative, Kelly Cramer, continues to expedite permits for sandbags for those who submit a request.

Tom Barwin
Sarasota City Manager

Note:  The LSPOA Board of Directors and Beach Erosion Sub-Committee will monitor the situation and continue to push the City of Sarasota to include North Lido Beach in any contemplated sand rebuilding projects on the Key.
