Moving City of Sarasota Elections

A bi-partisan initiative aimed at letting voters in the city of Sarasota decide whether to change their election schedules is again making the rounds.  The effort has come to the Board's attention and we'd like to make sure LSPOA members are aware of it too.

Sarasota has long conducted stand-alone elections in March, with runoffs in May, in odd numbered years.  Voter participation has been consistently very low.

The Decide the Date Campaign, launched last month, is attempting to get 3,700 certified signatures on petitions.  If accomplished, it would require the city of Sarasota to ask voters whether they would prefer moving elections to November in even numbered years to coincide with national elections.

The idea is to raise the visibility of local races when voter turnout is greater for high profile contests, such as for the presidency, senate or governor.

If any of our members are interested in supporting the initiative, please click on the link below, print out the petition, sign and bring to Tuesday's January 16th Annual Meeting at the Sarasota Yacht Club.
