| Male duck stands guard on Center Place after adopting the Berkebile's for it's new temporary home |
Editor's note: From time to time it's fun just to post feel good stories. This is one of them. A family of ducks has chosen Lido Shores as it's spring nursery, more specifically Mary and Kevin Berkebile's home at 1222 Center Place. We'll let Mary and Kevin pick up the story from here, and keep you posted.
A Mottled Duck family has set up housekeeping in our front yard under a firecracker plant. We have no idea why they chose our place! The mama duck has laid 4-5 eggs and she is tending the nest. However, she likes to take breaks and waddle into the street with her mate. Please watch your speed and be on the lookout for ducks on Center Place.
According to Google, the eggs will hatch at the end of April but it will be several more weeks before the ducklings are on their own. Without a pond, we purchased a kiddie pool to help with the duck rearing and to encourage mama to keep the babies off the street. We are also sourcing duck crossing signs and will post them as soon as possible.
Also, for the cat owners out there who normally let their felines roam free, it would be good to keep them contained. We don't want a duck massacre. We love cats, but we also know they are very proficient predators.
