Up Up and Away Saturday

Exciting Air Travel News: Sarasota residents will have a chance to see the Boeing 787, touted by Boeing as a groundbreaking super-efficient mid-size airplane, Saturday at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.

The test aircraft landed in Sarasota Friday evening, en route from Lima, Peru, and will take off Saturday at noon for its destination of Seattle, Washington. The public will be able to view the aircraft from the southeast end of the SRQ ticketing wing.

The 787, also known as the Dreamliner, can carry up to 290 passengers and travel up to 8,500 nautical miles. The 787 is said to consume 20 percent less fuel than the 767, emit less exhaust, offer a smoother ride and cleaner interior air than existing planes, and make use of composite materials in its construction.

"It carries twice the humidity of a normal airplane," said Capt. Mike Carriker, chief pilot for the 787 program. "A 14 hour flight was very pleasant because you have more oxygen, you have more humidity. You don't know why, you just don't feel as tired or worn out."

Bon Voyage Dreamliner!  ~JM
