Grand Prix Boat Races Draw Big Lido Shores Holiday Crowd

Saturday, July 2nd was just plain hot. And humid. The sun relentless. No breeze to speak of. You get the picture. In fact... the past few days have set records for the hottest in recorded history of the planet.

But that didn't stop the 100-or so Lido Shorians, family members and friends from donning swim suits... lining the beach, and crowding the Pavilion, to watch this year's 39th Annual Sarasota Grand Prix Powerboat races.

Colorful tents and beach umbrellas offered needed shelter, as did the Pav, where LSPOA provided sub sandwiches, beer, water and softdrinks. Mini-American flags decorating the Pav walkway were a nice touch.

The races, a number of which were held in front of north Lido Key beach, served as a backdrop for neighbors to hang out and catch up on the latest hood happenings. And a number of people beat the heat by getting in the Gulf for a birds eye view of the loud and colorful parade of monster power boats that growled by.

Social Committee co-chair Carol Bowen, along with LSPOA President Cathy Voigts and Katie Best decorated the tables and lugged the supplies to the Pavilion.

Thanks to Katie and Matthias Schubnell for some excellent pictures.
