Editors Note: The following is an update from Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin on an issue near and dear to our motoring hearts. Traffic congestion that affects us as we attempt to leave the island during season. And if you want to sound off on the voluminous vehicular volume, FDOT is giving you a chance this coming Tuesday.
And just in case you have a little spare time on your hands, and want to help make decisions that will shape Sarasota's future, we've included a list of various Advisory Board opportunities that are now available. Read on.

U.S. 41 & Gulfstream - 3 Left Turn Lanes To help boost traffic flow through the U.S. 41 & Gulfstream Ave. intersection, FDOT has installed a temporary third left turn lane.
The extra turn lane was created by re-striping an eastbound lane that was designated for straight-thru traffic only. So, that lane serves dual purposes now: left turns and thru traffic. This is a temporary solution to ease traffic backups from the Ringling Bridge to Fruitville Rd. during peak drive times in season. The long term solution is a planned roundabout at the intersection to continuously move traffic at a safe speed through the intersection. FDOT is holding a public meeting regarding the roundabout next week. More information on that in Weekly Briefs below.
At the same time and same location, construction will resume on the right turn slip lane for eastbound Fruitville Rd. which FDOT expects will boost traffic flow. We're told the slip lane will take several weeks to complete and should be open by the start of May, weather permitting. And, we're anxiously awaiting an FDOT approved signalized pedestrian crosswalk at U.S. 41 and First Street. With the recent opening of the Westin and Vue, we're seeing an increase in foot traffic in the area. City staff has been in close contact with FDOT about improving pedestrian safety along this heavily traveled corridor including at U.S. 41 & Fruitville. We expect the pedestrian signage and signal to be in place by early May. We continue to urge FDOT to make U.S. 41 through downtown safer for pedestrians while trying to accommodate traffic. |

U.S. 41 & Gulfstream - FDOT Meeting 3/27 FDOT will host a meeting to discuss the planned roundabout at U.S. 41 & Gulfstream Ave. on Tues., March 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium, 801 N. Tamiami Trail.
The meeting will be an open house format with detailed information on display
Those who live within 300 feet of the intersection including those along Sunset Drive and Golden Gate Point will be notified about the meeting. A roundabout at the intersection will provide further opportunities to connect downtown and the Bayfront while enhancing mobility and pedestrian and bicycle safety. We encourage all with an interest in sustainable mobility improvements to attend the open house and learn more. |

Sarasota, FL: The City Commission of the City of Sarasota is seeking individuals willing to serve on the following Advisory Boards:
Board of Adjustment
Two seats, required to be city residents
Board of Rules and Appeals
Ten seats with the following requirements:
• Licensed engineer
• Licensed mechanical contractor
• Licensed fire alarm contractor
• Two seats for individuals with education, experience and knowledge to be deemed competent to sit in judgement of matters concerning the Florida Building Code and the Florida Fire Prevention Code
• Licensed fire sprinkler contractor
• Licensed architect
• Licensed plumbing contractor
• Two seats for consumer representatives who are not, and never have been a member or practitioner of a profession regulated by the board or a member of any closely related profession

Three seats with the following requirements:
• Two seats for individuals with investment banking or investment management experience
• One seat with preference for participant of the plan
Historic Preservation Board
Two seats with the following requirements:
• Architect who is a city resident or owns property in the city

Newtown Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board
Three seats with the following requirements:
• Resident of the redevelopment area
• Citizen at large who is a city resident
• Individual involved in finance and banking
Nuisance Abatement Board
Two seats with preference for city residents
Parks, Recreation & Environmental Protection Advisory Board
Four seats with the following requirements:
• Two seats with preference for city resident
• Citizen with a particular interest in or association with Bobby Jones Golf Course
• Citizen with a particular interest in or association with Robert L. Taylor Community Center
Planning Board/Local Planning Agency
Two seats, required to be city residents
Independent Police Advisory Panel
One seat for a member, required to be city resident
Police Complaint Committee
One seat for a member, required to be city resident
Police Officers’ Pension Fund Board of Trustees
One seat for a city resident who shall be appointed by the City Commission
Sarasota Housing Authority
One seat with the following requirement:
• Resident (current in rent) of a housing project or a person receiving a rent subsidy
through the Housing Authority
Preference is given to persons who reside or own property in the City of Sarasota.
