Editors Note: We came across this display ad that appeared 60 years ago in the Sarasota Herald Tribune and thought we'd pass it along.  It seems the adage, the more things change, the more they stay the same, still holds true.  Lido Shores' now historic Umbrella House is just as interesting today as it was in its infancy back then. ~JM  


Lido Shores History

Sarasota in the 1950's was one of the most important places in the world for architectural creativity. We in Lido Shores think it still is.  The modern architecture movement was called the Sarasota School of Architecture, co-founded by architect Paul Rudolph.

In 1953, Philip Hiss, who developed our neighborhood, hired Rudolph to design a 'spec' house, known as the Umbrella House, on Westway Drive.  He placed it on the bend in the road and hoped it would attract attention from passing motorists and earn publicity for the fledging subdivision.  Now owned by Vincent and Julie Ciulla, it still does to this day.

Please join your neighbors this Sunday for our sunset gathering at the Lido beach pavilion an hour before the sunsets at 6:30 pm. BYOB - Bring your favorite beverage and an appetizer to share if you wish. All members and friends are welcome.
