Second Phase of Beach Area Resoration Begins: Project Includes New Bocce Court and Pavilion Repair

New Sabal Palms planted Friday
Another round of clearing invasive plants and adding more healthy native vegetation is underway at the Lido Shores beach pavilion area.  Beach Committee chair Ken Abt and committee member Kent Williams were hard at work once again Friday morning helping to clear an area just south of the beach access gate for a bocce court (more on that later) while crews from Good EarthworksDeeply Rooted and Blue Sky planted Sabal palms, coco plums, beach elder, golden creeper, muhly grass, sunflowers and blanket flowers at an under budget cost of $2,230.

A total of seven-new Sabal palms were planted and staked on Friday to the left of the path that leads from the parking lot to the beach.  Nine-palms were planted last summer on the pavilion side, and continue to thrive.  Just as last year, the palms and other plantings and ground cover will be carefully monitored and watered in for the next few months.

Just recently, Larry Reinebach and Kevin Berkebile revisited the well water pump, and discovered a leak in the line.  It's been repaired and a new tank added to help increase flow and water pressure.

Also part of the project—repairs and restoration of the nearly 10-year old Beach Pavilion. Elliott Himelfarb met with Pat Ball, Sam Holladay and Michael Epstein, the original pavilion architects and builder earlier this month. They discussed the life sycles of various materials used and will provide the Board with an itemized list of needed repair. Expect metal drip edge replacement on the roof, as well as some bench planks and ramp panels to be a priority.

Back to the bocce court.  Members Bob and Anne Essner are spearheading that portion of the project. Bob brought the idea up last year, and the Board approved as well as agreeing as part of the restoration project to clear space for the court. The Essner's will fund the materials and construction of the 60-foot court, with help from Lido Shores volunteers. ~ BT
