On Sunday, March 22, more than 80 Lido Shorians gathered at the wonderful Umbrella House for the annual Spring Potluck – and this year, the Social Committee shook things up! Instead of the usual sit-down dinner, the neighbors were asked to bring “heavy” hors d’oeuvres or desserts. With fewer tables and plenty of chairs, the evening took on a fun, cocktail-party vibe that made it easy to mix, mingle, and catch up with friends old and new.
The response? Overwhelmingly positive! The relaxed format sparked great conversation, lots of laughter, and a lively, welcoming atmosphere — a fresh take that many said they hope to see again. Betsy Tilkemaier organized and led a fantastic team of set-up and take down “elves.” Following their hard work, the evening began with Anne and Bob Essner, along with Marty Hylton III, President of Architecture Sarasota, welcoming neighbors for a tour of their Sarasota School of Architecture classic Umbrella House. In addition, Beth and Andrew Garvin graciously opened their marvelous Hiss Studio home for Lido Shorians to tour. Many attendees, visiting one or both homes for the first time, were clearly delighted by the experience.

Then the party began! Expertly curated wines from Judy and Fred Fiala, as well as beer and soft drinks, were served by the ever-capable Janet Augustine. Delicious appetizers included Jon Tilkemaier’s yummy lettuce wraps, Gail and Stuart Barzman’s fantastic empanadas, Colleen Carroll’s Reuben sliders, and Phyllis Coontz and Elaine Bellin’s Moroccan lamb meatballs, among many other delicacies. Desserts included Carol Bowen’s Pineapple Scotchie Bars, Laura Randa and Brian Doan’s gorgeous macarons, and Julie Boschelli’s refreshing fruit salad and several more. Absolutely no one went hungry!
Neighbors mingled, chatted and caught up with one another, until the evening finally drew to a close. Betsy Tilkemeier and her team of helpers once again, sprang into action, efficiently stashing chairs and tables in the City of Sarasota’s Neighborhood Truck, returning the Umbrella House to its pre-party state.

The Social Committee sends heartfelt thanks to all who volunteered, brought amazing dishes, and especially to the Essners and Garvins for sharing their houses. We look forward to seeing everyone around the neighborhood, at Meet and Greets and at the Fall Potluck on October 25!
