LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
CALLING ALL LSPOA MEMBERS—PLEASE ATTEND:
City Commission Meeting
Date: Monday, November 5th
Time: 1:30pm (This is a new time. It used to start at 2:30)
Location: Commission Chambers, City Hall
For those of you who were able to attend the October 21st Potluck, you are already aware that we are now the victims of a nationwide, growing phenomena—the “Commercialization of Residential Property”.
This summer, the house at 1406 Westway Drive was purchased by a commercial real estate development company and set up as a short-term rental for 17+ guests through online platforms like Airbnb and Siesta Key Luxury Rental Properties. Since we are a volunteer property owners association (not a home owners association), we have no control over the minimum number of rental nights the city allows (currently an 8 night minimum). We only have control over whether we allow LSPOA membership and its privileges (i.e. private access to the beach).
On October 15th, a group from Gillespie Park went before the commission asking for a new category to be created – “Host-occupied Rentals” – so they can be exempt from the current 8 night minimum for short term rentals. They are echoing what Commissioner Hagen Brody is proposing and has already placed as an official agenda item for the November 19th City Commission Meeting. Commissioner Brody has gone on the record stating that he believes “there’s a way to permit short-term rentals without risking the commercialization of neighborhoods.” Unfortunately for us, it has already happened.
See this link from recent article:
So, it is important that we turn out in mass on Monday to show Commissioner Brody and the other 4 commissioners that we oppose the creation of a special “Host-occupied rental category” or any policy change that would allow short-term rentals of less than 8 nights. They need to understand that not only can it happen, but it has already happened—to us! We won’t stand for homes in Lido Shores turning into flophouses!
Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you Monday!
Lynn CarvelPresident, LSPOA Board of Directors
