LSPOA President's Message

LSPOA President Anne Essner
Lido Shores has the reputation of being a great place to live — not only for its interesting and varied houses, but also for its “members only” beach access, the beauty of our beachfront property and the warm friendships fostered among neighbors as a result of LSPOA social events.

Protecting, maintaining and enhancing these elements have been the focus of the Board over the past couple of years. Our beach front property has so much more potential than merely to be a parking lot or a path to the beach. It is a valuable communal asset that offers many ways to be better-utilized by our members.

To that end, the beach pavilion — setting of twice-monthly Sunset Gatherings, potlucks and “Hot Dogs on the Beach” Fourth of July celebrations — has undergone some much-needed refurbishment to ensure many more years of use. Members asked to have the foot-washing spray reactivated; a solar-powered foot shower and bench have been installed to make getting rinsed off and shoes back on so much easier. The landscaping has been cleaned up and enhanced with native plants and sabal palm trees, making the whole pavilion area much more beautiful and inviting.

The most recent addition to our beach front area has been our bocce court, which was donated with the hope that this activity will provide yet another reason to bring Lido Shores neighbors together.  Plans are to start a friendly bocce game an hour prior to each Sunset Gathering — so if you like to play, want to learn how to play or just want to watch (there’s a nice new bench that will seat six or so people), come to the beach area a little earlier than usual to try your hand.

This Spring, the LSPOA Board of Directors polled its committees to find out what improvements, if any, might be desirable for the beach front area. What emerged was the need for a secure on-site  storage facility. With the advent of the twice-monthly Sunset Gatherings, the Social Committee has been lugging a table and various items (tablecloths, trash bags, bug spray) down to the pavilion from storage in member homes.

The bocce court needs occasional rolling (with a 300-pound roller) after being wet down (requiring a hose and nozzle); a 7-foot wide grooming broom needs to be used during the time a game is played — and all of this equipment also has been brought down from an off-site storage location. Should our members be interested in adding another game to the beach front (horseshoes, anyone?), that equipment would also need a safe place to be stored. While the storage facility would hold only LSPOA-related beach front equipment, it would be accessible to any member who requested the lock code.

Over the past few months, the Board has been discussing various options for this storage facility. It has felt a little like Goldilocks and the Three Bears: some structures were too big, others were too small — but now we think we might have found something that is just right: reasonably priced, sized for our needs and appropriate to the site. Over the summer, LSPOA board members will be gathering information concerning construction details, all permitting requirements and cost estimates. The Board will reconvene on Monday, September 8th. At that meeting, discussion will occur as to whether or not to proceed with the project. If merited, a vote will be taken. Interested LSPOA members are welcome to attend.

Here’s hoping everyone has a great summer!

To help LSPOA members stay up-to-date with topics a brief summary of each Board meeting will be posted online at www.lido-shores.com. Once approved by a Board vote, meeting minutes will also be available upon request to LSPOA President Anne Essner, AEssner2@gmail.com

As always, members in good standing are welcome to attend all board meetings. Meetings are held usually at 5 pm on the first Monday of the month from September through May. Meetings are not scheduled during the summer months. Advance notice of time and place of the meeting will be added to the LSPOA website and an agenda will be posted one week prior. Those who “follow” the website will receive an email notice as well.
