It is the end of a season. The end of spectacular flowers in the deep of night. Sometimes a single flower would bloom. Each flower was beautiful and ephemeral, lasting only one night. It is the end of dragon fruit season.
For some people, it was all about the final scene, which resulted in visually surprising, sweet, juicy fruit.
For others, it was the draping cactus-like appendages sprouting spectacular flowers. Sometimes a tangle of flowers graced us with their presence.
When pollination was successful, we got a bountiful crop. Since these aren't sold at the supermarket, this was a real treat for us. Lido Shores neighbors shared in dragon fruit at two beach gatherings – first in August and then in October. I hope the plant withstands our coastal stinginess with fresh water and nutrients as well as the omnipresent bugs and fungi. For I would love another season with this fruit.
Any neighbors who want a section to start their own plant, just give Tom or Diane a call. ~DD
